Resume for Finance Student

Finance recruiting is the most format-strict track in the job market. Your resume has 30 seconds to clear the screen — and within those seconds, recruiters look for specific signals in a specific order: school, GPA, deal/modeling experience, leadership, technical fluency.

The Wall Street one-pager

Education at the top (school, major, GPA, SAT/ACT if ≥1500/33), then any banking/PE/HF experience, then leadership, then technical and personal. No graphics, no color, no two-column layouts. Times New Roman or similar serif. 11pt body.

Deal blocks and modeling experience

Even a school-club M&A pitch counts as a deal block. Format: target / acquirer / size / your work / outcome. Modeling experience: be specific — DCF with three-statement build is different from a comp screen.

  • Deal: 'Pitched $1.2B acquisition of [Co] by [Co]; built three-statement DCF and trading comps'
  • Skills: 'Excel (advanced), VBA, Python (pandas), Bloomberg, Capital IQ'
  • Cert: CFA Level I candidate (June 2026)

Quant vs. IB resumes

Quant prefers technical depth: math, stats, ML, languages. IB prefers polish, leadership, deal exposure. Same person, different resume per track. FlowJob handles both with one tailoring pass.

Examples

Deal bullet — before vs. after

  • Before: Worked on a club M&A project.
  • After: Led 4-person team pitching $850M sponsor-to-sponsor sale of mid-cap SaaS target; built LBO with 3 financing scenarios; presented to faculty + Goldman MD.

FAQ

Is GPA required?

If it's ≥3.5, list it. Below that, only list it if the firm explicitly asks.

How important is school name?

Heavily weighted in IB/PE recruiting. Less so in quant, where coursework and projects matter more.
